Dodge Charger vs Dodge Challenger

The Dodge Challenger or the Dodge Charger? Which Iconic Muscle Car is Right for You? We Help You Choose

Movie stars. TV stars. Street racers. Both the Dodge Challenger and the Dodge Charger have played a lot of roles in the five decades since they were first released, but none quite as exciting as the role they play here in the St. Louis area, where they've served as the go-to choice and favorite car for many drivers over the years. At Schicker Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Washington, MO, these two cars are two of our favorite styles and we're excited to tell you more about each of them.

Whether you've been a fan of these two impressive cars for years, or you're just looking closer now for the first time, we want to help you make the right decision. There's a lot to know and appreciate about both the Challenger and the Charger, and they appeal in different ways. Allow us to tell you more.

The Dodge Challenger

  • Style. The biggest, and most outwardly noticeable, difference between these two cars is their exterior design. The Challenger is a two-door coupe. Both have the secure cargo space of a rear trunk for your gear, and both feature the muscular and imposing stance and design that drivers love.
  • Interior space. The differences in their exterior design translate to a few key differences on the inside as well. Both cars seat up to five people in two rows. Once your backseat passengers climb into the rear of the Challenger, they'll find less legroom, shoulder room, and hip room.
  • Performance. Both of these impressive cars have an extensive menu of powertrain options, starting with standard V6 power and going up from there. Both also offer the choice of either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, depending on your trim preference, and both offer the engaging performance and handling that have made them legendary. But the Challenger starts with a little more power right out of the gate, and it tops out with a higher maximum output of 807 horsepower.
  • Transmission. Are you the type of Eureka or Sullivan driver who prefers the engagement and feel of a manual transmission rather than an automatic? You may want to consider test driving the Dodge Challenger then. The Challenger presents a selection of choices, including an eight-speed automatic and a six-speed manual, depending on the trim choice and your personal preference.

The Dodge Charger

  • Style. The biggest, and most outwardly noticeable, difference between these two cars is their exterior design. The Dodge Charger, which is a little older than the Challenger and came out in 1966 compared to the Challenger debut in 1970, is a four-door sedan. Both have the secure cargo space of a rear trunk for your gear.
  • Interior space. The differences in their exterior design translate to a few key differences on the inside as well. Both cars seat up to five people in two rows, but the Charger, as the four-door car, has a backseat that's more spacious and comfortable than the Challenger. The Charger allows passengers to enter and exit the backseat with ease and offers more than seven inches of extra legroom in the rear, four inches of extra shoulder room, and more than 8 inches of extra hip room.
The Charger tops out at 797 horsepower from its top-tier engine and trim combination.
  • Transmission. The Charger sedan comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission standard as the only option.
